Miss Katie’s Crab Shack

We stopped into Miss Katie’s Crab Shack on a busy Wednesday Band Night. A humble little place smack bang in the public bar of “The Public Bar” on Victoria Street.

Katie Marron, of Movida and Eau De Vie fame, is at the helm and brings with her generations of inspiration.

Complete with fake sharks head and family recipes dating decades. Miss Katie’s prides itself on being “Melbourne’s most authenthic take on southern style feasting”. As a first time patron it is hard to disagree. I couldn’t decided if I felt more like Homer Simpson or Barney Ruble in a house of punks, complete with my over sized bib and wooden hammer.

The shack is directly across the road from Melbourne’s Victoria Market. So it is safe to say that they aren’t lying, when they say the menu is full the freshest seafood and poultry. All sourced daily sourced daily.

Miss Katie took over the heavily used space in mid-August 2013, and has gone about making it her own.

Band Merch Retailer Planet 13 Unveils YouTube Channel Featuring Videos of Products, Eases Customer Enquiries

Melbourne, Victoria (PRWEB) November 28, 2012

Using only photos and descriptions to guide them, online shoppers face the uncertainty of knowing whether what they’re buying online is what they’ll actually receive in their mailbox. Planet 13 removes the fear by making their customer’s shopping experience easier with the launch of their YouTube Channel featuring videos of their products. “It’s hard to imagine all aspects of a product from just a photo and description,” says Shawn Scott, musician and owner of band merch store Planet 13, “so we’ve started uploading videos of each product to our YouTube Channel, and it’s helped answer questions for our customers in a single view.”

The ease of getting nearly anything delivered to your door with a simple click of a button has made online shopping commonplace. What’s also commonplace is the classic ‘text and photo’ descriptions of products, which aim to convince the potential customer to buy.

Planet 13, an online band shirt and merchandise store, receive countless emails asking for further details on items such as shoes and accessories. Items on the website have both photos and full descriptions, but “Since items like footwear have a lot of different elements to them,” says musician and owner of Planet 13, Shawn Scott, “trying to accurately convey everything about that item in writing isn’t easy, be it online or in an email.”

To help ease the flow of customer enquiries about his products, Shawn has delegated the task of creating product videos to his team, who have just launched the Planet 13 YouTube Channel. “Customers are loving the videos already,” continues Shawn, “because they don’t need to ask any questions, the videos show the item in action and up close.”

Planet 13 pride themselves on giving their patrons excellent customer service, Shawn further remarks, “these videos are just an extension of our great service. By launching product videos on YouTube, our customers can properly see the items they’re interested in without having to contact anybody for more information.”

Shawn goes on to say that he’s received positive customer feedback about the band merch videos as well as “a lot less email questions about the products, so that means customers are getting the information they need in one hit. And I’m not swamped with queries!”

A bit about Planet 13

Planet 13 was conceived and created in 2004 by Shawn Scott, front man of the once-popular Melbourne based glam/punk band Voodoo Lovecats. His online store Planet 13 features an extensive range of fully licensed entertainment items, band shirts and merchandise.

Musicians, Educators, and 600,000 Students Band Together for Music Education in Australian Schools; Monster Music Reacts

Australia (PRWEB) December 12, 2012

Music: Count Us In 2012, in which 600,000 students in schools across Australia sang the same song at the same time in November, was seen as a huge success, according to an article from The Age. Professional singer, songwriter, and musician Josh Pyke mentored three high school students, Sun Woo Kim, Ryan Chelva, and Jorja Bromley, and collaborated with them on the song, called Different People (Stand Together).

The three students were chosen because, after considering 80 songs for the event, judges decided that three songs were worthy, and decided to give all three young songwriters a chance to be mentored in a workshop with a professional, where they wrote the song from scratch.

Music: Count Us In, whose mission is to raise support and awareness for music education in schools across Australia, has been in existence since 2007. It is run by the Music Council of Australia, with support from ex-Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett, currently the Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth. Other high-profile supporters this year were The Voice contestants Prinnie Stevens and Mahalia Barnes.

According to the same The Age article, Richard Letts, who is currently the Music Council of Australias Executive Director, was happy with the participation in the event, but is not happy with the current state of music education in Australian schools. According to Letts, up to 80% of primary schools in NSW do not have any music education in their classrooms. Letts points out that in a four year teaching degree curriculum, future teachers only receive 17 hours of music education.

Letts also points out that the economic status of schools plays a factor in whether or not they have music education, with the more-affluent schools receiving music education, while less-affluent schools dont. Letts also references literacy studies in which musical classes were proven to be more effective at producing literacy than literacy classes are.

In a recent post on his blog, Danny Achurch, Owner and Proprietor of Monster Music, writes that Australian schools are coming up woefully short in music education.

Achurch is concerned about the state of music education in Australian schools: It is fairly well-documented that the 80% figure of schools that dont offer music education quoted by Richard Letts is accurate, not only in NSW, but all across Australia. There are so many benefits to a music education, intellectually and socially, that not having music constitutes neglect on the part of the Australian educational system.

Achurch continued, Music helps kids learn. It helps kids relate to one another. It helps kids with self-esteem issues. All of these benefits are totally outside the scope of what most educators consider when they make decisions concerning music education, and they are being taken away from our children because most educators have no idea of the benefits provided by music education.

Achurch contributes what he can through Monster Music: We would love to see the system change, and see more music taught in Australian schools, but we dont see it happening in the near future. We respect and admire those who are trying to change that system, but it does no good to students who are currently being deprived of the far-reaching benefits of music education.

Achurchs solution: private music lessons. The only effective way to ensure that students get a musical education is to get them private lessons outside of the school system.

Monster Music offers guitar, voice, piano, bass guitar, drum, violin, and general music lessons in Melbourne, Perth and across Australia.
