Road Freight Transport in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) November 28, 2012

The Road Freight Transport industry dominates the Australian market for non-bulk freight, with advantages in price, speed, convenience and reliability compared with other modes of transport. Within cities, light commercial vehicles are the dominant form of transport for the so-called last mile of delivery of goods. Yet, the industry has experienced turbulent times in the past five years. According to IBISWorld Industry analyst Caroline Finch, the industry has been under pressure, first from rising fuel prices and then from falling demand in the wake of the global financial crisis. Over the five years through 2012-13, industry revenue is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 2.4% to be worth $ 48.3 billion in 2012-13, including growth of 2.4% in the current year.

As the economy strengthens, total inventories increase as activity across retail, manufacturing and wholesale expands, boosting demand for road freight services. The long-term outlook for industry demand is positive, with the total demand for freight movements in Australia set to increase over the next five years, says Finch. In the decade through 2012-13, the industry was able to innovate by adopting new technology such as larger trucks. This increased the labour productivity of the industry and allowed the industry to cater to growing demand. In the five years through 2017-18, the industry will likely face productivity challenges. The industry is expected to remain the dominant mode for transporting non-bulk goods around the country. Industry revenue is forecast to grow in the coming five years. Despite this growth, the industry may struggle to maintain profitability as it faces growing skills shortages, reductions in fuel rebates and the potential of changed pricing to access the country’s road networks.

The Road Freight Transport industry displays a low level of market share concentration. The four top players are Toll, Linfox, K&S, and Scott Corporation. Market power in the industry is highly concentrated. The major companies, although contributing a relative small amount to industry revenue, have significant market power through the whole supply chain and in infrastructure ownership. Significantly, their market concentration tends to increase when industry revenue growth slows, as in 2009-10. This demonstrates that when volumes drop it is the small players who get squeezed out of the industry, with the larger players as a group outperforming. Major customers in the retail, manufacturing and petroleum markets also have strong market power. Operators such as Toll, or retailers such as Coles and Woolworths, determine the freight rates that they are willing to pay. These rates then get passed down the industry hierarchy. This has resulted in small and medium size enterprises struggling to introduce fuel surcharges.

Mortgage Brokers in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) November 29, 2012

Buying one’s own home has long been the Australian dream. It is often the biggest financial decision an individual will make in their lifetime, and for that reason, borrowers find comfort in consulting an expert who can help them wade through the complex range of products. The Mortgage Brokers industry in Australia is relatively new, having been around for less than two decades. Mortgage brokers have filled a gap in the market that has been missing in the past, and are seen as providing comprehensive, convenient and unbiased advice to their clients. Because they represent a panel of lenders, they are able to offer their customers a range of products and tailor a mortgage to their specific needs. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Tim Stephen, for these reasons, demand for services from the Mortgage Brokers industry has grown, but the industry was not immune to the economic downturn. Revenue growth over the five years through 2012-13 is estimated to measure a compound annual 0.1%, as the industry has suffered through reduced credit volumes and flat house prices.

For 2012-13, the Mortgage Brokers industry in Australia is estimated to be worth $ 1.57 billion on the back of healthy year-on-year growth of 4.4%, as demand continues to rebound and house prices show signs of growth. In the five years through 2017-18, the industry is expected to break free from the shackles of the global financial crisis, typified by tight credit and record levels of consumer savings. Participation will increase due to favourable conditions, and competition will intensify, led by the industry’s largest players. Supply of finance is expected to rise as credit loosens and more lenders enter the market, adds Stephen. This will contribute to growing demand for broking services as lenders continue to use brokers as a medium for distributing their products. IBISWorld forecasts that by 2017-18 the industry will be worth $ 1.9 billion.

Industry market share concentration is moderate; the three largest players are Australian Finance Group, AHL Holdings and Mortgage Choice. Broker groups are expected to undergo considerable consolidation in the coming years. Since the financial crisis, which was essentially caused by money being lent too freely, banks have tightened margins and commissions paid to mortgage brokers. This has put pressure on operators to find more-efficient ways to continue profitable operations. Lower commissions are likely to lead to an accelerated level of consolidation, via mergers and acquisitions and industry exits. While the total number of operators within the industry is expected to grow, the average size of each will also increase. Lower margins on residential mortgages mean that efficiency and scale will become more important, and smaller players will have a hard time staying competitive.

Mortgage brokers in Australia generally act on behalf of lenders, aiding borrowers in sourcing and applying for mortgage finance (for both residential and investment real estate purposes), and in refinancing existing mortgages. In general, brokers do not charge mortgagees any fee for their services. Rather, mortgage brokers receive origination and trailing commissions on originated funds directly from lenders.

Seed Production in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Available from IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) November 30, 2012

The worst years for the Seed Production industry coincide with the worst of Australian droughts during 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10. As agricultural production suffered from punishing weather conditions, demand for seeds fell substantially as farmers avoided purchasing seeds with no end to the drought in sight. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Ee Jen Lee, while this was succeeded with higher than average rainfall the following year, two consecutive years of weak demand have resulted in an 5.4% annualised contraction of industry revenue. In 2012-13, Seed Production industry revenue is projected to grow a moderate 1.8% to reach $ 292.8 million. This growth will be on the back of higher seed prices and stronger demand for seeds related to high agricultural commodity prices.

Other factors influencing demand for seeds are policy developments. Lee adds, while there is no indication from regulators or governments that genetically modified canola moratoriums may be lifted in the states of South Australia and Tasmania, these will be due for review during the next five years. Further, water use policies, especially those concerning the Murray-Darling Basin may change farmers’ decisions on the variety of seed used.

The Seed Production industry has a medium level of concentration, and major companies include Pacific Seeds Pty Limited, PGG Wrightson Limited, Bayer CropScience Pty Ltd and Heritage Seeds Pty Ltd. Increasing investment and greater involvement from the world’s largest seed companies in Australia’s local Seed Production industry will boost seed research and production capabilities. Further, the development of Asian agriculture and increased reliance on Australia’s research capabilities are expected to have a positive effect on export volumes. As the average annual rainfall is expected to decline from its current peak over the next five years through 2017-18, Seed Production industry revenue is forecast to grow at a moderate rate, but may exceed forecasts if operators can successfully tap into growing export markets.

Credit Unions in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 01, 2012

Like the rest of Australia’s Finance subdivision, the Credit Unions industry has been hurt by the financial crisis and a slowing economy. However, their mutual status, prudent lending and heavy reliance on deposits for funding have largely shielded credit unions. Over the five years through 2012-13, industry revenue is expected to decline at a compound annual rate of 3.1% to $ 3.83 billion. According to IBISWorld Industry analyst Ee Jen Lee, This decline is partly attributable to the exit of several industry participants and the expiry of the First Home Owner Boost, which dampened residential home loan growth. In 2012-13, revenue is forecast to decline by 7.5% as more credit unions convert to bank status, thus exiting the industry.

As the economy stabilises, IBISWorld forecasts industry revenue to grow over the next five years. Growth is expected as residential lending stagnates due to mounting housing affordability pressures, says Lee. As the battle against the banks persists, the trend to merge and consolidate operations will continue. However, as long as the industry continues to extend its brand presence and remains focused on maintaining customer satisfaction and loyalty, there is no reason to expect that it will not grow in its existing markets and even attract customers away from the banks.

The level of market share concentration in the Credit Unions industry is low. However, the industry has been undergoing consolidation for many years, and there is no sign of this process abating. In 2009, the second- and third-ranked players – Australian Central Credit Union and Savings & Loans Credit Union – merged, which greatly increased their market share. Industry concentration began from a low base due in part to the pre-Australian Financial Institutions Commission regulatory requirements in different states (which effectively restricted interstate expansion), and the restraint that credit unions’ common bond of association traditionally placed on their growth and market share. These restraints have since loosened and industry concentration received a boost with the merger of Credit Union Australia (CUA) and Australian National Credit Union Limited in 2006, creating a major player. Industry concentration will continue to increase, driven by the need to achieve cost savings to remain competitive in a dynamic market and the level of competition from other financial institutions.

Clothing Retailing in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 04, 2012

The Clothing Retailing industry in Australia has faced several tough years with cautious consumer spending, lower prices, higher rents and the global financial crisis driving down revenue. Over the five years through 2012-13, industry revenue is expected to contract at a compound annual rate of 2.3%. Revenue is anticipated to contract by 1.4% in 2012-13, to total $ 11.6 billion. Until late 2008, Australians flocked to shopping centres around the country and spent freely on all types of items, including clothing. However, since the economic downturn, consumer spending behaviour has changed and clothing retailers have suffered. According to IBISWorld industry analyst, Ricky Willianto, consumers are now more informed about spending and Australia’s private savings rate has grown to its highest point since 1984. Retail figures suggest consumers remain somewhat nervous about the climate of the global economy. On top of this, the increasing popularity of online shopping has posed additional challenge to traditional bricks-and-mortar retailers that do not enjoy cost flexibility.

Growth in revenue for the Clothing Retailing industry in Australia has also been undermined by a decline in prices. Prices have been driven lower by fierce competition and the surging Australian dollar. The high value of the Australian dollar means that for many retailers, especially the larger operators, stock can be purchased at significant discounts, adds Willianto. However, consumers have scaled back spending, inciting price reductions that effectively null any gains from lower cost of goods. The industry is highly fragmented and therefore concentration is low. Some merger and acquisition activities have taken place as major players seek to capture a greater share of the market and improve economies of scale. Several players have also attempted to reinforce their market positions by acquiring smaller companies that target similar markets.

Competition is expected to strengthen as industry participants fight for the consumer dollar. The entrance of a number of international players and increased acceptance of online shopping, supported by the strong Australian dollar, will change the industry’s landscape. Industry participants will need to position themselves in niche markets to flourish in this increasingly competitive environment. The Clothing Retailing industry is fragmented and diverse with a large number of small, independent operators. In 2012-13, the three largest participants are Premier Investments, Country Road and Specialty Fashion Group. Despite an increase in merger and acquisition activity in the past five years, market share concentration has not changed materially and remains low. This has mainly been because most major acquisitions have involved private equity or players outside the industry.

Computer Maintenance Services in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 06, 2012

Few people in Australia are comfortable repairing their own computer. Consumers continue to view internal operations of computers as complicated, although this has not translated to booming demand for the Computer Maintenance Services industry in Australia. Businesses today have made two clear shifts in operations that spell trouble for the long-term viability of computer maintenance providers. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Craig Shulman, the tendency to lease computers rather than buy them often means that computers are replaced when, or before, they malfunction. Furthermore, the increasing presence of comprehensive, in-house IT teams means that many repairs can be conducted at minimal cost. An influx of IT specialists occurred in the late 1990s due to the dot-com crash. Subsequent consolidation of the IT industry has meant abnormal growth in the number of firms offering maintenance services as many operatives established their own repair companies after being retrenched from a downsizing industry.

As a result, the Computer Maintenance Services industry in Australia is facing an uncertain future, especially after a difficult past five years. During the five years through 2012-13, industry revenue has contracted at an annualised rate of 0.2%. In 2012-13, industry revenue is forecast to increase by 1.3% to $ 1.8 billion. The rapid pace of technological advancements, the growing need for faster processing speeds and the falling price of consumer electronics mean that replacing a faulty machine is often more economical than repairing it, adds Shulman. In the aftermath of Australia’s economic downturn, companies are resorting to maintain servers and other peripheral equipment, and households are also following suit with their personal computers.

Today, while the IT industry at large has recovered, the need for repairs is falling and appears set to continue a downward trajectory. Industry revenue is forecast to decline in the five years through 2017-18, as private households become increasingly willing to lease computers, and as the price of consumer electronics continues to drop, resulting in decreased demand for repairs. The largest four operators are Hewlett-Packard Australia, IBM A/NZ, UXC and Symantec Australia, and account for the majority of industry revenue. IBISWorld expects that over the past decade, market share concentration has declined as the number of suppliers of computer equipment increased, and larger computer vendors outsourced some maintenance functions. The industry is becoming increasingly fragmented, as smaller firms specialise in skills that are in higher demand.

Domestic Appliance Retailing in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 07, 2012

Mounting competition and changes to the retail landscape are expected to create a tough trading environment for the Domestic Appliance Retailing industry over the five years through 2012-13. Industry sales over this period are projected to decline by an annualised 2.0% through 2012-13. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Claudia Burgio-Ficca, trading conditions have been affected by declines in the average selling price of electrical goods and volatility across the retail market. Industry conditions during this period were also affected by trends in household disposable income, consumer sentiment, interest rates and household formation rates. Industry revenue is forecast to rise by 0.8% to $ 19.5 billion over 2012-13. Despite solid growth in disposable income and a recovery in the consumer sentiment index, revenue across the domestic appliance industry will be affected by continued price erosion and volatility in the retail market. In the quest for bargains, consumers are expected to continue shopping online for domestic appliances, saving themselves trips to bricks-and-mortar stores. Such tactics will erode the market share of traditional domestic appliance retailers while boosting the volume of sales generated by the online market.

Industry revenue is forecast to rebound over the next five years. Sales will be driven by continued advances in product design and technology. To this end, key growth areas will include smartphones, e-readers, internet protocol TV (IPTV) and 3-D TVs, adds Burgio-Ficca. However, revenue will continue to be affected by rising interest rates, contractions in consumer sentiment and competition across the industry.

Despite the mature nature of the domestic appliance market, market share concentration has declined for the Domestic Appliance Retailing industry over the past five years owing to the demise of key player. Concentration has been subject to increasing competition over the past five years. Operators have faced challenging trading conditions due to the growing range of domestic appliances sold by competitors. In addition, growth in demand for latest trend items such as 3-D TVs has increased the range of goods on offer and led to strong price-based competition among operators. Sales and profit margins have also been affected by price deflation across a number of categories. Market share concentration levels during this period have also been affected by the continued rationalisation of players including the demise of WOW Sight and Sound and Retravision and the sale of Dick Smith to a private equity group. The major players are Harvey Norman, Muir Electrical, BSR Australia, and JB Hi-Fi.

Personal Legal Services in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Available from IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 08, 2012

Workers, households and individuals across Australia are exposed to numerous risks. The number of incidents and transactions that occur annually that require the services of a legal practitioner is endless. While a significant contributor to industry revenue is personal injury, other significant components of the industry’s services include property law and family law matters. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Ee Jen Lee, As the demand for legal services from households pertaining to these matters are typically unaffected by economic conditions, industry revenue has not been greatly impacted by the global financial crisis. Over the five years through 2012-13, revenue for the Personal Legal Services industry in Australia is forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 3.1%, to reach $ 3.11 billion in 2012-13. In 2012-13, industry revenue is forecast to grow by 2.0%.

The fiercely competitive personal injury market, among the largest of personal legal services offered, is consolidating. The Personal Legal Services industry’s largest participants have been actively acquiring practices and capitalising on their increasing brand recognition to win more customers. Others have chosen to pursue organic growth through aggressive marketing and referral business. This is occurring amidst a downward trend in the number of workplace injury incidence and motor vehicle accidents, added Lee. At the same time, many homegrown firms are seeking growth in similar legal markets overseas. Law reforms in the United Kingdom have enabled non-legal ownership of legal practices under an alternative business structure. This reform has enabled well-capitalised companies to expand operations in the country.

As the UK landscape continues to evolve over the next five years, adopting many of Australia’s legal characteristics, Australian firms are well placed to establish themselves overseas. Locally, the nation’s largest players will leverage on their roles in class actions to further raise their profile. Besides tapping into opportunities overseas, companies will be diversifying their service provision into areas such as family law to create more stable streams of revenue. At the same time, as smaller owner operators continue to be squeezed out by the industry’s largest players, many will incorporate a full service offering to cement their place in the industry. On the back of a steady demand for personal injury services, family law and conveyancing services, IBISWorld forecasts that industry revenue to continue to grow over the five years through 2017-18. Debt Collection in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 10, 2012

After a disappointing industry performance during the onset of the global financial crisis, the Debt Collection industry has begun to rebound. According to IBISWorld Industry analyst Jeremy Edwards, over the five years through 2012-13, the industry has experienced improving conditions, despite consumers looking to save more than they spend. The industry has grown by a compound annual rate of 3.4% over the five years through 2012-13. Conditions are improving slower than expected, but increasing consumer confidence and household disposable incomes should result in increased spending. Increased scrutiny towards debt collectors may result in slightly lower revenues as operators engage in less risks. Industry growth is expected to be 4.6% in 2012-13 to be worth $ 1.9 billion.

Reduced reliance on credit will lower value and volume of debt available for purchase from clients. The recent financial scare has also made Australians savvier spenders, even among the youth and young working adult generation, with data indicating that this age group is saving more. A habit that is likely to further depress revenue growth for debt collectors over the next five years, says Edwards. The number of bankruptcies is also expected to level off, reducing earnings from this segment of debtors. Following these trends, consolidation is likely to occur as the fight for market share grows. Employment will continue to grow, but at a slower rate as efficiency gains from technology are forecast to increase debt collected per employee per hour. Furthermore, larger firms with the capacity to expand overseas will do so, fulfilling labour requirements at a lower price overseas to protect profit margins. Over the five years through 2017-18, growth should be stronger than average in the immediate term as households and businesses deleverage while economic conditions remain positive. Over the next five years, a larger proportion of revenue should be generated from contingent collection as opposed to the debt portfolio collection.

The Debt Collection industry is experiencing increasing consolidation, however, the industry remains fragmented. The industry involves a range of operators with varying sizes; the two largest operators are currently Collection House and Credit Corp. Within the industry, a large number of small players exist, dealing primarily with recovering loans from individuals and small businesses. As such, the industry is deemed to have a low level of market share concentration. Market concentration is expected to increase over the next five years despite some new entrants, as larger companies purchase small firms or simply push them out due to ability to bid higher for debt portfolio collections.

Debt collection firms retrieve debt payments from delinquent individuals and businesses that have fallen short of the terms and conditions outlined by their loan agreements. A firm can act as an agent on the behalf of a creditor for which the firm receives a fee or percentage of the total amount collected. Alternately, firms purchase ‘bad’ debt from the original creditors at a discount to its face value.

Ceramic Tile and Pipe Manufacturing in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 11, 2012

The Ceramic Tile and Pipe Manufacturing industry is a small player in the global tile market and is one of the smallest of the Australian building product manufacturing industries. The industry has undergone substantial rationalisation since the 1980s. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Anthony Kelly, ceramic pipe manufacturing has nearly disappeared, while ceramic tile manufacturing operations have endured substantial restructuring involving the exit of several leading players, staff cuts, production cost reductions and productivity improvements. The top four players in the industry in 2012-13 are expected to be National Ceramic Industries Australia Pty Ltd, CSR Limited, Boral Limited and Brickworks Ltd.

The Ceramic Tile and Pipe Manufacturing industrys revenue is forecast to total $ 85 million in 2012-13, representing a dramatic slump by an annualised 5.9% over the past five years. Industry sales have been affected by adverse trends in the housing and commercial building markets, the deterioration in competitiveness against low-cost imports and the substitution of non-ceramic building materials, says Kelly.

Imports of industry products capture the majority of domestic demand, and the industry exports a small share of its production. Domestic demand is expected to fall over the five years through 2012-13, corresponding with a downward trend in the value of total building construction and particularly a slump in the number of single unit housing commencements, which is the primary market for terracotta roof tiles. The industry’s performance is forecast to improve over the next five years, in line with the return of investment into the housing and commercial building markets. Domestic demand and the volume of production are also expected to increase.

Cheese Manufacturing in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 12, 2012

The Cheese Manufacturing industry has faced turbulent conditions. According to IBISWorld Industry analyst Ryan Lin, unprecedented commodity price volatility has been the main driver of both industry fortunes and woes. Global dairy prices reached near-record highs over 2007-08 and cheese prices rose substantially. This increase largely resulted from growth in dairy demand from the growing economies of South Asia, coupled with crippling drought conditions across most of Australia and New Zealand, which resulted in dramatic supply shortages and price increases. This significantly inflated industry revenue and export values over the past five years until the global financial crisis reversed the trend. Falling domestic and global dairy demand, combined with increased production in response to higher farm gate prices, led to declines in dairy and cheese prices. Domestic total cheese consumption increased by a marginal rate over the past five years, while production volumes have varied by cheese type. Over the past five years, industry revenue is estimated to have increased at an annualised rate of 0.4% to total $ 4.32 billion, with 0.8% growth in 2012-13.

Over the five years through 2017-18, industry prospects are expected to be relatively bright. Growth will be mainly driven by a forecast economic recovery, stable dairy product prices and resurgence in demand from the developing world, says Lin. This would ultimately lead to the sustainable and continual growth of the Cheese Manufacturing industry in Australia. Product and packaging innovations in the form of functional, gourmet and health-based cheese products are also expected to generate renewed interest in a mature market, with demand stemming from the healthy eating movement, and premiumisation and convenience trends. In addition, the industry needs to be wary of environmental and regulatory constraints imposed by various domestic and international agencies, especially with regard to import tariffs and sustainability.

The major players in the Cheese Manufacturing industry are Murray Goulburn, Lion, Bega Cheese, and Fonterra. There are also some medium-size players in the industry that account for a small proportion of revenue, along with smaller operators in niche markets that produce organic or specialty cheese varieties. The industry has a high level of market share concentration. Industry concentration has increased strongly over the past five years, with Bega Cheese’s purchase of the cheese manufacturing assets of Kraft Foods. Further consolidation in the industry may occur, particularly between larger players and smaller players, but it is unlikely to be significant considering the current height of concentration.

Optometry and Optical Dispensing in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 13, 2012

The ageing population will be a key factor promoting growth in the Optometry and Optical Dispensing industry. As adults age, they are more likely to develop conditions that are diagnosed or treated by optometrists and result in the use of visual aids. While the nature of the industry’s services means that there will always be steady demand, competitive pressures are expected to soften revenue growth. Where cheap imports would translate into higher profit margins, the industry’s participants are forced to pass on cost savings to customers. For this reason, industry revenue is expected to only grow 0.4% in 2012-13 to reach $ 2.9 billion. However, revenue volatility is relatively low when compared with other retail industries. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Ee Jen Lee, the necessity of eyewear and optometry services retail means industry performance is stronger than the general retail trade sector.

Despite the necessity of prescriptive eyewear, the global financial crisis did hurt the Optometry and Optical Dispensing industry ever so slightly. Despite this, the strong growth that followed afterwards means that over the five years through 2012-13, industry revenue is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 1.4%. Like the retail sector, however, the industry has had to adapt to increasing competition from online eyewear retailers. Foreign overseas retailers with sophisticated supply chains and global networks have been making their presence felt, forcing Australian retailers to build their online presence quickly, says Lee. The major players in the industry in 2012-13 are expected to be Luxottica South Pacific Holdings Pty Ltd and Specsavers Pty Ltd. The industry displays medium concentration overall, with the optical dispensing segment displaying higher concentration than the optometry segment.

Over the next five years, growth in the volume of services and products is expected to be driven by an ageing of Australia’s population, growing household incomes and improved accessibility to eyewear. Competition will, however, stiffen as non-traditional eyewear retailers expand their presence to capitalise on their existing locations and brand awareness in other markets.

Carbon Dioxide Production in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Available from IBISWorld

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) December 14, 2012

The Carbon Dioxide Production industry has remained stable over the past five years. Low revenue volatility has been derived from its reliance on resilient downstream demand markets. The industry provides carbon dioxide to food and beverage manufacturers primarily due to its application as a food additive. Low discretionary incomes resulted in purchases of inexpensive luxuries by consumers. The industry also faced supply shortages in 2011-12 due to two major plants temporarily closing down, with soft drink manufacturers finding it difficult to source carbon dioxide in some areas. As a result, the industry grew by a compound annual rate of 1.7% over the five years through 2012-13. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Aries Nuguid, the effectiveness of the introduction of the new carbon tax is expected to be limited in 2012-13, with industry revenue expected to continue to grow by 1.6% to be worth $ 425.9 million as subsidies prevent declines.

The Carbon Dioxide Production industry has a medium level of market share concentration. The industrys major players are Air Liquide Australia Limited, BOC Limited, Orica Limited and Origin Energy Limited. Nuguid adds, conditions have not been strong enough to attract new competitors, particularly as business confidence struggled and as global conditions remained uncertain. Uncertainty over the effect and implementation of the carbon tax also resulted in entrants being cautious while barriers to entry remained high.

The outlook is improving for the Carbon Dioxide Production industry despite the introduction of the emission trading scheme by the Federal Government. In the years through 2014-15, subsidies are expected that will allow a transition so that jobs are not lost and Australian competitiveness is not excessively harmed. New technologies and initiatives are expected to be embraced by the industry as ways to increase profit margins and environmental efficiency. Downstream markets are also expected to improve as overall conditions improve.
